Which blackout(s) did you experience?
1977 (New York City Blackout)

In your own words, tell the story of your experience in the blackout(s). Try to recall specific events and the people, places, and things involved; also include more general reactions, images adn last impressions?
THE NIGHT OF THE BLACKOUT I WAS OUTSIDE AT MY GIRLS APT, IN CROWN HT. BROOKLYN RIGHT UP THE BLOCK FROM JACKIE ROBERSON (EBBETS FIELDS). MY MAN SAID TO ME THAT ALL THE LIGHTS HAD WENT OUT IN EBBETS FIELDS, WHEN I LOOKED I SAID OH SHIT! THEN I LOOKED ON THE BLOCK AND ALL OF THOSE LIGHTS WERE OFF. SOME PEOPLE THOUGHT IT WAS THE END OF THE WORLD! I LIVED ON FLATBUSH AVE AT THE TIME SO I RAN HOME TO CHECK ON MY MOMS AND ALL OF THE LIGHTS WHERE OUT IN THE HALL-WAY SO I HAD TO FEEL MY WAY UP FOUR FLIGHTS OF STAIRS. MY MOMS WAS OKAY, THEN I LOOKED OUT THE WINDOW LATER ON THAT NIGHT AROUND 12:00 AND I SAW PEOPLE BREAKING INTO OUR LOCAL STORE AND COMING OUT WITH EVERYTHING SO I WENT DOWN AND GOT MY GROOVE ON TOO. ALMOST EVERY STORE ON FLATBUSH AVE WAS HIT INCLUDING MACY'S AND SEARS. THE POLICE COULD NOT DO NOTHING BECAUSE THEY TOO WERE AFFRAID TO GET OUT OF THE CAR. THE NEXT MORNING PEOPLE WENT TO THE PARK AND EVERYONE AND HIS MOTHER WAS HAVING A COOK-OUT, SO THE FOOD IN THE FREEZER WOULD NOT GO TO WASTE. THE LIGHTS CAME ON LATER THAT DAY, SOME WERE HAPPY AND SOME WERE NOT BECAUSE THEY WERE WAITING FOR NIGHT TO COME AGAIN.
THE 1977 BLACKOUT IN N.Y.C. WAS THE WORST BLACKOUT EVER! EVEN IF IT HAPPENS NOW IT WOULD NOT COME CLOSE TO 77'.

Why did the blackouts happen, in your opinion?
CON ED FUCKED UP, AND IT WAS VERY HOT THAT DAY SO PEOPLE WERE USING ALOT OF ENERGY.

What is your opinion regarding the general causes of power failures (blackouts)?
WE ALL HAVE A JOB TO DO AT WORK, IF WE CAN'T DO IT THEN THEY HIRE SOMEONE ELSE, SO IF CON ED DON'T HIRE THE RIGHT PEOPLE WHO KNOWS HOW TO PREVENT THIS WE COULD BE LOOKING AT 1977 ONCE AGAIN.

Did either blackout seem significant or shocking at the time?
1977 only

Why did you consider the blackout(s) to be significant or insignificant?
BECAUSE MYSELF AND MANY OTHERS COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED OR JUST GETTING OUT OF JAIL.

How did the blackout(s) affect you?
I'LL NEVER FORGET, AND I'M 40 YRS. OLD NOW.

Did the blackout(s) have any larger meaning in your mind?
No

Did the blackout(s) cause any profound crisis?
No

How did the blackout(s) affect your daily reliance on electricity?
Became less reliant
